I have a couple of old "buddies" like this from when I was single.... hubby doesn't mind me talking to them then on a trip back to NZ he even gave me permission to meet with one of them for a one on one.... NZ buddy met me the first night for a walk on the beach, he was all very flirty and touchie and then the next day when I told him my husband had given me permission to follow through he was way to busy and cancelled our next 2 meet ups while I was in town....
I put it down to the excitement of the chase being a lot more fun than something being handed to you with no strings.

We have kids, we tend to meet more on social levels before making "play dates" due to the costs of baby sitters etc for the unknowns of chemistry.
We have meet other couples with kids at theme parks, at a family restaurant etc once we have been communicating for some time and decided that we feel comfortable with the other couple.
We also have another system...
Meeting a couple with kids - She meets him, he meets her and then take it from there
Meeting a couple without kids - They pick which one of us they meet
Meeting a single guy - He meets him for a drink and decides if he comes back at some stage to meet her
Meeting a single girl - She meets the lady and again decides if she comes back at some stage to meet him.
We've found it a lot easier when the other couple have kids so understand that you can't do things at a drop of a hat.
